Glad AESA has come out with another interesting issue of climate change by posting the meeting notes of Dr.Sadamate. Thanks to Dr.Sadamate for giving us an understanding about various initiatives being taken up by different countries to address the most burning problem of climate change which is posing a serious threat to the world nations. It is also good to read the role of extension in reducing the global temperatures
Climate Change hits the poorest people the hardest. It is clear that we cannot tackle poverty successfully without also tackling climate change In India ,although the contribution of agriculture to the Gross National Product (GNP) is around 35 % in the absence of of employment opportunities in industrial & service sector, over 85 % of the rural income is generated from agriculture ,who spend about 75 % - 80 % of the earning on food. Agriculture is the major source of livelihood but most of the illiterate farmers have not been successful in cultivating their land economically .Over 12-15 % of the rural families are landless and among the land holders 69 % are marginal farmers with less than 1 ha holding & about 21 % are small farmers with 1- 2 ha holdings. Out of the 147 million ha agricultural lands, about 60 million ha are located in arid zones, which are mostly owned by the poor families. As the chances of crop failure on these lands is very high ,the farmers generally do not invest in external inputs like improved seeds, fertilisers & plant protection measures & end up with poor crop yields, even during normal years Tank irrigation system has a special significance to the marginal & small scale farmers who make a very large number essentially depending on tank irrigation as these systems are less capital -intensive & have wider geographical distribution than large projects.. GREEN IDEAS Gravity & Siphon Irrigation system based on TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE,PARTICIPATORY APPROACH & COMBINE WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY HELPS IN IMPLEMENTATION OF GREEN IDEA .
